Laser anemometer measurements of trailing vortices in water
نویسنده
چکیده
A series of measurements of trailing vortices behind lifting hydrofoils is described. These measurements were made in the Caltech Free-Surface Water Tunnel, using a laser-Doppler velocimeter to measure two components of velocity in the vortex wake. Two different model planforms were tested, and measurements were made a t several free-stream velocities and angles of attack for each. Velocity profiles were measured a t distances downstream of the model of from five to sixty chord lengths. These measurements are the first results of a continuing experimental programme. In 3 3 of this paper, the theory of trailing vortices is discussed. The effects of ' vortex wandering ' upon the measurements are computed, and the corrected results are seen to be in reasonable agreement with the theory.

Measurements of Wake Vortices Interacting with the Ground
Although wake vortices are known to decay more rapidly near the ground than away from the ground, the details of the ground interaction are not well understood. Propeller anemometer arrays located under the approach path have been used to study vortex transport and provide some information about the vortex interaction with the ground, such as the generation of secondary vortices via boundary-la...
متن کاملSelf-similarity of trailing vortices Self-similarity of trailing vortices
Trailing vortices have been repeatedly shown to exhibit a remarkably robust selfsimilarity independent of the Reynolds number and upstream boundary conditions. The collapse of the inner-scaled circulation profiles of a trailing vortex has even been previously demonstrated for the cases of highly unsteady and turbulent vortex systems, as well as for vortices which were incompletely developed. A ...
متن کاملMeasurements of natural uranium concentration in Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf water in by laser flourimetric method
ABSTRACT Background : Natural uranium exists in earth crust and seawater. The concentration of uranium might increase by human manipulation or geological changes. The aim of this study was to verify susceptibility of laser flourimetry method to determine the uranium concentration in Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf water. Materials and Methods : Laser flourimetric method was used to determine...
متن کاملThe effect of photobleaching and velocity fluctuations on single-point LIF measurements
This study investigates the effect of photobleaching on laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements. Photobleaching causes the fluorescence to be velocity-dependent, which is undesirable if quantitative measurements are being made. To quantify this effect, simultaneous and coincident measurements of fluorescence and velocity were made within the measuring volume of a three-beam laser-Doppler ...
متن کاملFlow around a Suddenly Accelerated Rotating Plate at Low Reynolds Number
The study explores the evolution of flow field and forces of a low-aspect-ratio flat plate undergoing an accelerated rotating surge motion from rest. The measurements were performed in a water tank at Reynolds numbers of 20,000, based on the chord length and terminal velocity at 75% span. A tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry (Tomographic-PIV) technique was used in order to capture three-dim...
